All purpose social music, friends! My favorite version is by the Stanley Brothers.

I'm working on a building, I'm working on a building

I'm working on a building, for my Lord, for my Lord

It's a Holy Ghost building, it's a Holy Ghost building

It's a Holy Ghost building, for my Lord, for my Lord

If I was a drunkard, tell you what I'd do

I would quit my drinking and work on a building too

If I was I gambler, tell you what I'd do

I would quit my gambling and work on a building too

If I was a preacher, tell you what I'd do

I would keep on preaching and work on a building too

Up above my head I hear music in the air

Up above my head I hear music in the air

Up above my head I hear music in the air

And I do believe, I do believe

There's a heaven somewhere

I hear weeping in the air...
I hear praying in the air...
I hear freedom in the air...
I hear music in the air...
get on board

Song Sample:

Donald Saaf sings and plays tenor banjo and mandolin. Cynthia Hopkins plays accordion and sings. Yoshi Waki plays upright bass. DZ sings and plays guitar and mandolin.

I learned this song from my brother-in-law Donald Saaf. He learned it from his friend Ralphie in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia.

The gospel train's a-coming / I hear it just at hand

I hear the wheels a-rumbling and / rolling through the land.

Get on board little children / Get on board

Get on board little children / There's room for many a-more

I hear that train a-coming
She's coming round the curve
She's loosened all her stream and brakes
Straining every nerve

The fare is cheap and all can go
The rich and poor are there
No second class aboard this train
No difference in the fare

granito dé mostaza

Song Sample:

Joshua, Albert Robert and Pamela all sing en español. Guillermo plays tambora and guiro. Johny plays tenor sax. Rob rocks the hammond organ. George rocks the tuba. DZ sings en ingles and plays guitars.

This song is a popular one in the Spanish speaking churches around Latin America. I learned it from my Dominican friend Joshua Brown. His mother Yolanda was my Spanish teacher at El Taller in NYC.

If you have faith, if you have faith, like a tiny seed
of mustard Thus saith the Lord our God...
Then you can say to the highest mountain
Move aside, move aside...
And yes the mountains will have to move...

And yes the mountains will have to move...
Los vecindarios mejorarán, mejorarán, mejorarán...

By and by oh when the morning comes

When all the saints of God are gathered home

We'll tell the story of how we've overcome

For we'll understand it better by and by

We are tossed and driven on the restless sea of time
Somber skies and howling tempest oft succeed a bright sunshine
In the land of perfect day when the mists have blown away
We will understand it better by and by
By and by oh when the morning comes...

We are often destitute of the things that life demands
Want of shelter and of food, thirsty hills and barren lands
We are trusting in the Lord and according to His word
We will understand it better by and by

Father Goose is on the gospel train! This is
from his CD called It's a Bam Bam Diddly, one
of my all-time family favorites.

And we won't drag on behind.

Sonia sings background vocals and hits the triangle. Rob also sings backgrounds and plays percussion and organ bass pedals. Wingding plays the spoons. DZ sings and plays 12 string guitar and harmonica.

After recording ˇNueva York! almost completely in Spanish it was pretty wild to write and sing in English again. I was thinking of the sound of 1908 and the possibilities of 2008.

When all God's children gather under the sun

When all God's children gather under the sun

Look out of the window see a new day has begun

When all God's children gather under the sun

When everybody's splashing out in the rain...
The storm clouds will be laughing and we're going to do the same
When everybody's splashing out in the rain

So get your brush and colors and paint it now...
Maybe you can't see it but just make it anyhow
Get your brush and colors and paint it now

When all God's children gather won't it be fine...
You show me your dances and I'll do a couple of mine
When all God's children gather won't it be fine

When all God's children sing out won't it be fine
Dancing all together won't it be fine
When all God's children gather won't it be fine

Jesus on the Mainline tell Him what you want

Jesus on the Mainline tell Him what you want

Jesus on the Mainline tell Him what you want

If you're sick and you want to get well, Tell Him what you want...

home in that rock

Song Sample:

Colin plays drums. Barbara sings. George plays upright bass. DZ sings and plays guitar, tenor banjo, and harmonica.

I think learned this in a book of Sing Out magazine reprints, always a great source of material. Like so many of these tunes, this one has unlimited social possibilities. Is there ever a time this wouldn't be fun to sing? I don't think so.

I've got a home in that Rock, don't you see?

I've got a home in that Rock, don't you see?

Up above the sea and sky I thought I heard my Savior cry

I've got a home in that Rock, don't you see?

Poor man Lazarus, poor as I, don't you see?...
Poor man Lazarus, poor as I, when he died he had a home on high
He had a home in that Rock, don't you see?

Rich man died, he lived so well, don't you see?... )
Rich man died, he lived so well, but when he died he had a home in hell
No home in that Rock, don't you see?

God gave Noah the rainbow sign, don't you see?...)
God gave Noah the rainbow sign, no more water but the fire next time
He had a home in that Rock, don't you see?

I've got a home in that Rock, don't you see?...)
Up above the sea and sky I thought I heard my Savior cry
I've got a home in that Rock, don't you see?

the welcome table

Song Sample:

The Blind Boys of Alabama: vocals Colin plays drums. Barbara plays guitar. Rob shakes the tambourine. Cynthia plays accordion. DZ sings and plays mandolin.

We recorded this song with the five Blind Boys at my house in Brooklyn. I kept my daughter out of school for the day, we all ate fried chicken and rehearsed the tune at the dining room table.

I'm going to sit at the welcome table

I'm going to sit at the welcome table

One of these days, hallelujah

I'm going to sit at the welcome table

Sit at the welcome table one of these days, one of these days

I'm going to feast on milk and honey...

I'm going to tell God how you treat me...

All God's children gonna sit together...

I'm going to sit at the welcome table...

we've been down this road before

Song Sample:

By Dan Zanes; Sister Barbara Music ASCAP)

Rob plays the hammond organ. DZ sings and plays 12 string guitar.

I was trying to say here we are, together, we're walking, it's dark, it's frightening, it's familiar but we're together. And it's not going to last forever. There are songs to sing and people to sing them with. Thank you to everyone who helped make this CD and thank you to everyone who took the time to learn more about the plight of immigrants here in the U.S.A.

We've been down this road before

We've been down this dark and rocky road before

Seen the faces in the windows

Seen the locks on every door

We've been down this road before

We will walk this night as one

We will walk this rough and rocky night as one

Until the darkness falls behind us and we're standing in the sun

We will walk this night as one

Our voices lift in the strength of songs

Our voices lift and tell our stories in the strength of songs

When the shadows close around us we'll be singing for the dawn

Our voices lift in the strength of songs

God is here among us all

God is here walking in this night among us all

He'll guide us when we wander and He'll catch us when we fall

God is here among us all

We've been down this road before

We've been down this dark and rocky road before

We've been in the shadows but we won't be anymore

We've been down this road before

God is here among us all

We've been down this road before
