sidewalks of new york:
what a song! this was written in 1894 by james blake and charles lawler. blake was a hat maker which just goes to show that you don’t have to be a professional musician to make great music. i first heard this when my daughter’s class sang it at an assembly. somehow i thought that they were singing "the cops play ring around rosy" and it really confirmed the idea that they don’t write 'em like they used to!
song sample:
lyrics:
east side west side all around the town
the tots play ring around rosie london bridge is falling down
boys and girls together me and mamie o’rourke
tripped the light fantastic on the sidewalks of new york
down in front of casey’s old gray wooden stoop
boys and girls together oh we formed a merry group
on those summer evenings we would sing and waltz
while jackie played the organ on the sidewalks of new york
musicians:
christine and laura’s kindergarten class from st.ann’s school sings... george rush plays tuba... josh korda plays accordion and trumpet...g.e smith on banjo-mandolin... john hagen on saxophone... ned holder plays trombone... norman, annette, paula and andrea greif, cousin alex, elaine wine, honey, ed, alex and sarah ingram, and anna and dan all sing with gusto! .
